thursday three: favorite rieslings.
Posted May 7, 2015
on:I started drinking wine a few years ago. At first, I would only drink moscato. The sweeter, the better. I moved on to Rieslings not too long after, and now I dabble in Pinot Grigios. However, when I really want a glass of wine, I reach for a bottle of Riesling. I’ve had good ones and I’ve had bad ones, I’ve had some that I don’t remember the name of, and some that I can’t find anymore. I continue to try new Rieslings and below, in no particular order, are a few of my favorites.
Basignani Winery
I discovered Basignani Winery when Jennifre and I won a tasting and tour at a silent auction. We invited some of our favorite ladies and had an AMAZING time, which JK documented beautifully in photographs. I’ve since been back to Basignani at least 3 times. They are constantly hosting events there, including outdoor movies in the summer (I think it was last summer when we went to watch Music & Lyrics there – AWESOME). The owners are sweet and it’s a really fun place to be. They have several sweet wines, like the Monkton Sweet Delight and the Vidal, but I tend to purchase their Riesling more than any other wine they have. I would also like to note that they make the best Chardonnay I’ve ever had… and this is from someone who hates Chardonnay. If you’re in the area in the summer, you should definitely visit.
Chateau St. Michelle Harvest Select Sweet Riesling
I generally see Chateau St. Michelle on the menu as a (chain, mostly) restaurant’s option for Riesling. I’d had it several times and was never quite a fan. One day, I noticed the Harvest Select at my local liquor store (yes, liquor store. It has a surprising amount of wine there and it’s cheaper than the fancy wine store) and decided it was worth it to try. I’m so glad I didn’t give up on Chateau St. Michelle! It’s usually about $10, which works for me.
Dr. Loosen
Ok, here’s where I ask you not to judge me. For my birthday about two years ago, my sister had different Rieslings sent to me for about three months. I. Loved. That. Gift. Right up there with the wine refrigerator my mom bought me. (Do you see a theme here?) Dr. Loosen is the one that stood out to me as the best. Why would someone judge me for that, you ask? Because they sent more than one and I have no idea which one I liked! I added a wine here that I don’t remember the name of! But I loved it so much. I’m thinking of hunting this wine down and trying several until I figure out which one it was. It’s a tough job, but somehow I’ll muddle through.
I am constantly trying to get my hair to grow, be healthy and, most importantly, do what I want it to do. It goes well for awhile before the success goes to my head and I get lazy. Leads me right back to where I am now – with freshly cut hair to start from “scratch.”
This go-round, I’m leaning on photos of my hair idols: Kerry Washington, Sanaa Lathan and June Ambrose. I don’t know if they have weaves or wigs or if it’s their real hair in their photos. I do not care. I want the three Ls of hair in these pictures – long, luscious and luxurious.

thursday three: beauty products.

on:Confession: I’m hopeless at makeup and the like. I can’t get with it. Don’t want to learn. And I’m terrified that if I ever did start wearing makeup, I would instantly believe that I could not leave home without it. With that said, I do quite enjoy nail polish and I’ll throw on some lip gloss every now and again. So this Thursday, here are the things that I like:
Natural Lip Roll On – Rose by The Body Shop
I happened upon this lip balm by accident. I was in the airport and my lips were all the way cracked. It was annoying and embarrassing. I decided to drop in The Body Shop to see if I could find something semi-cheap that I could throw on my lips to help. I’d been trying another product that wasn’t working. I didn’t really want the Rose scent/flavor, but I believe it was the best out of what was available. I’m incredibly satisfied with this product. It fixed my lips really quickly and they haven’t cracked like that since. (The link I found for the Rose one was for the UK. The above link leads to the Berry roll on.)
ColorBurst Lip Butter – Berry Smoothie by Revlon
I lean towards berry lip colors and I doubt that will stop. I ran out of the Avon Extra Lasting Lip Gloss in Everlasting Petal that I was using. I picked this one up in Rite Aid and fell in love with the color. I also love that it’s not sticky.
Lasting Finish Pro Nail Enamel – Stiletto Red by Rimmel
Nail polish is great. I’m not very good at applying it, but I can fake it enough that my nails don’t look too horrible, unless you look too closely. Red is my favorite color of nail polish. At any given time, I’ll have 3-5 different shades of red. For a while, Sally Hensen’s Red Carpet was my favorite red. Then I met this one. Rimmel has pretty amazing reds. Stiletto Red is no exception. The brush on the Lasting Finish Pro is also shaped different, and makes application a bit easier. (The link is for eBay as I couldn’t find one for this color. I think it may be discontinued.)
