tv time: period shows.

I love talking about television. I love talking about shows I like, upcoming shows that I’m excited about, getting show recommendations. With cable, Netflix and Hulu, there is so much content available I can barely contain myself (or keep up). However, there has always been one genre that has eluded me – period shows. With the notable exception of Dr. Quinn (which I loved, likely due to a childhood crush on Sully), I’ve never been much for them. I couldn’t even watch Mad Men.
But it looks like my tastes have changed recently. I’ve discovered three period shows that I’ve really gotten into. (I feel like it’s worth noting that only one is a BBC show, though BBC seems to be top dog in period pieces and everyone’s favorite go-to.)
1. Underground (WGN)
Tonight’s season premiere was actually the inspiration for this post. I originally watched it because a) Aldis Hodge and his super fine self that I developed a crush on when I watched Leverage and b) I try to support shows starring people of color. I L-O-V-E this show. While it’s often heartbreaking (to be expected), the characters are beautifully resilient and hopeful. It’s well-written and the actors are fantastic.
2. Poldark (BBC/PBS)
This was a recommendation from a friend who lives for BBC and period shows. I only agreed to watch it when I Realized the lead was Aiden Turner who I fell in love with during his time as a vampire on Being Human. (…I’m sensing a trend here.) It’s pretty good and I like the story.
3. Turn (AMC)
This was the first of the three that I started watching. I found this show before Underground when I was looking up things Aldis Hodge was in. Even knowing he wasn’t a major character, I gave it a try anyway. I’ll admit it took about three to four episodes before I could tell the characters apart, what with the white powder wigs and uniforms and all. I was very much into it by the end of the first season and I’m trying to make time to delve into S2.
Ok. Well. It looks like the moral of the story here is that I can be convinced to watch just about anything if there are attractive men in it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. But these shows are actually good, too!
Got any period show suggestions for me? Turn is ending after S4 so I’ll need to replace it with someone.

My love for Dancing with the Stars is no secret. This season, however, I ended up relating a lot to Bindi Irwin and I am incredibly excited that she won. That girl is the sweetest, most positive teenager I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I spent half the season trying to figure out how that was possible, and I’m wondering if it was because she was raised by koalas and kangaroos. (I joke, I kid, but Bindi and her family do live at the zoo.)
In celebration of her win, here are my three favorite dances from her and Derek:
1) Week 10: Jazz Trio – Obviously, Derek picked Mark to be their partner in the trio. The choreography here was fantastic; it was just so creative and danced perfectly. I felt like in this week, Bindi put all the other contestants to shame.
2) Week 6: Dirty Dancing/Rumba – Who doesn’t love the Dirty Dancing routine?? I was so excited that they were assigned this routine and loved the way it turned out.
3) Finals: Freestyle – And last, but most certainly not least, is their freestyle to Footprints in the Sand. This routine had everyone in tears. It was absolutely gorgeous, the perfect freestyle for Bindi.

There is seemingly no end to how much I talk about television with you guys. And here we are again. What can I say? I love watching TV. I’m not watching as many shows as I used to and, despite summers past, I anticipate a light TV schedule this summer. Below are the shows that I’m into right now that don’t go together at all.
The Profit (CNBC)
Like Bar Rescue, but better. The show, where Marcus Lemonis offers a failing company money in exchange for part ownership, is starting its third season next month. I enjoy Marcus far more than the guy on Bar Rescue. He doesn’t do all the crazy yelling seen on BR. I also like the element of surprise at the end. You never know if they’ll actually agree to the deal. I’ve only seen three episodes so far, and only one has ended up with the owners and Marcus coming to an agreement and moving forward together.
About a Boy (NBC)
I only watched this show because I adore David Walton. I have a fairly good radar when it comes to shows that don’t have a chance, but I let myself like this one anyway. It’s pretty dry, but adorable. I mean, come on, it’s David Walton!
Daredevil (Netflix)
With the exception of Ironman, Thor, and Arrow, I haven’t been the biggest superhero fan these days. I can’t watch Agents of Shield or Agent Carter, thought the last two Superman movies were complete trash, and didn’t see the last two movies in the Batman triology. However, excellent casting of Matt Murdock/Daredevil (I hardly remember the movie, can’t say for sure if I’ve seen it) and Rosario Dawson as a nurse named Claire drew me into this show. Their chemistry is GREAT; love their scenes together. If they can fix Fisk (say that 10 times fast), I could continue to be down for this one.
